What Shoe Repair Actually Costs — and When It's Worth It

A plain breakdown of typical repairs and the math on repair versus replace.

What repairs generally cost

Heel caps land in the twenties, rubber half soles between forty-five and seventy-five, and a full welted resole between one hundred and roughly one-ninety depending on materials.

The math

The rule most cobblers use: if the repair costs less than a third of replacing the shoe with something of equal quality, repair it. On a $350 welted oxford, a $150 resole is obviously worth it. On a $60 casual shoe, it usually isn't.

Hidden value

Fit has value that doesn't show on a receipt. A broken-in boot that fits your foot exactly is worth more to you than a stiff new pair at the same price.
