Seven Habits That Double the Life of Dress Shoes

Rotation, trees, brushing and early repairs — the small things that matter most.

1. Rotate

Never wear the same pair two days running. Leather needs 24 hours to release moisture.

2. Use shoe trees

Cedar trees hold shape and absorb sweat. Insert them while the shoe is still warm.

3. Brush before polish

Grit left on the surface gets ground into the grain by polishing cloths.

4. Fix heels early

A $20 heel cap now prevents a $60 heel rebuild later.

5. Add a topy

A protective rubber layer on a new leather sole doubles its life for a modest cost.

6. Use a horn

Forcing your heel in crushes the counter, which is the part that holds the shoe's shape.

7. Dry slowly

Wet shoes go near a fan, never a radiator.
